Today

I had a pretty busy/exciting day today. It started out with me going to Methodist to get “processed” for my new job. Basically I filled out a bunch of paperwork and got a physical. Although this in itself wasn’t exciting, the prospect of starting my new job in a week and a half is.

THEN, I picked up my wedding dress! It is now in my possession. It needs ALL kinds of alterations, but still! What I will be wearing the day I get married is hanging in my closet!

Next I came home and watched the finale of “Dancing with the Stars” that I recorded (yay Kristi!) while working on my computer.

After that I went and bought a couple pairs of scrubs, then stopped by the hospital to see my friend Sara who just gave birth to a lovely baby girl yesterday! I’m so proud because she’s just recently gotten into “Gilmore Girls,” I of course lent her all of the seasons that I have on DVD, and she named her daughter Rory! Such a sweet baby.

The visit was short, and so I headed over to help David’s mom with something, got a salad at Wendy’s, then went to my soccer game. I was beginning to have quite a headache at this point, and when I started playing it became much worse. But thank God for ibuprofen, because I gulped down four of them and by halftime I was almost as good as new. And we even won!

And now…I am exhausted. Good night.

Scripted

Last night I totally came home and watched Dancing with the Stars, Gossip Girl, AND The Hills. I don’t know what came over me, but I have to say that it was fun.

I was watching with my roommate Amanda and her friend Lilly, who is loud and hilarious. Everything is better when you watch it with her. When it was time to watch The Hills, we discovered that something went wrong with the DVR and it failed to capture the sound. We were determined to view the episode, so we turned on the captions. This inevitably led to us acting out the parts in each scene, and we even sang the theme song. I call it TV Karaoke.

If you’re bored, I highly recommend this activity. Especially with The Hills. It is an entirely different viewing experience.

Thoughts From the Week

There has been a lot I’ve wanted to write about this week, but the reason I haven’t is because it seems I’ve been gone from morning till night every day since Tuesday. And I’m not the type of person who can or will sacrifice sleep for much of anything. Thus, all of my blogging thoughts are swimming around in my head, and if I don’t put them down NOW, they just might be lost forever. So this may seem somewhat unorganized and random, and that’s because it is.

I’ll start with the big news in my little family circle, which is that my fiance David’s older brother Chris proposed to his girlfriend Kim on Wednesday evening. We are all so excited that they have made it official! They plan to elope to the west coast in June, and I won’t deny that I am somewhat jealous of that decision as I figure out who gets to stay on our guest list and exactly how many dollars we are going to pay for a photographer. But really, I want the whole shabang and I guess I always have, so I’ll just try to enjoy the process. Anyway, the point is: congratulations, Chris and Kim, I’m so excited to be your sister (in-law)!

Speaking of them, David is currently living in a house that Chris owns, and the four of us have decided that we will all live together there once we’re married. I know that may sound crazy to some people, but we get along great, have already spent a lot of time there together, and it will save us a lot of money for awhile. It does mean that I will have to cut back on the amount of “stuff” that I bring into the marriage (i.e. furniture), and I still don’t know what to do with some things that I can’t get rid of, like all my books. Also, my lease ends in July and for the few months after that until we get married I’ll be moving in with my parents. So I’ll need to be getting rid of my bed, desk, bedside table, and dresser pretty soon.

While we’re on the subject of life-changing events, I picked up my cap and gown the other day. Two weeks until I’m wearing it! My last final exam is on Monday!

I’ve been working a lot lately, and since I am the queen of busy work at the office it tends to get boring. That is why I am forever grateful to David for procuring me a satellite radio. Now I can listen to NPR all day! Just kidding, only about half the day. I admit I do enjoy the occasional E! Channel program. That is how I came to learn all about FHM’s sexiest woman alive list that was just released. I normally wouldn’t comment on this, but I feel obligated because two of the dancers from Dancing with the Stars made the list (Cheryl Burke at no. 40 and Karina Smirnoff at no. 78) but my favorite, Julianne Hough, did not. My roommates and I all totally have a girl crush on her, and I just don’t understand her getting passed over. So here’s to you, Julianne!

And I will leave you with this happy thing: a very short video of my brothers’ puppy’s latest trick:

It’s Sad When…

I’m watching Beauty and the Geek and I relate more to the geeks than the beauties.

Sharing The Love

If you don’t know this about me, then you need to: I am a die-hard fan of Gilmore Girls. I am not ashamed because it is an excellent show. Even my brother admits it.

Anyway, I was vaguely aware that my new roommate, Courtney, had a distaste for the show, but I suppose I chose to block it out of my memory because I didn’t want to believe it. The other night we were sitting at the dinner table and she said, “I’ve been eyeing your Gilmore Girls DVDs lately,” and she had this look on her face as if she was about to confess to me that she prostitutes herself at night once we’ve gone to sleep.

“Have you ever seen it?” I responded brightly.

“No, I have never watched a single minute of it,” Courtney admitted.

“Oh! Well let’s watch it! I think you’ll really like it,” I said optimistically.

“Well here’s the deal,” she said seriously. “My friend Katie and I from college used to hate the show. We would tell each other, ‘Yeah, maybe we do watch Dawson’s Creek, but at least we don’t watch Gilmore Girls.’”

“But how can you judge it if you’ve never seen it?” I asked sweetly.

“I know, I know. Anyway, now Katie watches it. She even had a whole party for the series finale. She said to me, ‘Courtney, it’s good! All these years, we were wrong.’ So I’ve been thinking that watching the first episode can’t hurt.’”

I was so excited to hear this, because getting someone hooked on Gilmore Girls is one of my favorite things to do, up there with eating ice cream and sleeping in. And I just knew that once she gave it a chance, she would like it. (That philosophy hasn’t exactly worked on my boyfriend, but there is another whole obstacle to get past there called Man Pride.) But just in case she wasn’t as thrilled with it as I would like her to be, I told her that she was not allowed to make fun of it if she didn’t like it. She would have to be respectful. And she agreed.

Well, she likes it. I knew she would. We watched two episodes that night. I definitely could have kept going, but then again this is coming from a girl who watched an entire season in two days. The only thing I wasn’t pleased about was that Courtney kept asking me questions about how things end up on the show. I didn’t want to tell her because I wanted her to watch the entire series and find out the right way. But then again, I didn’t want to upset her by holding out and thus turn her off.

“So neither of the characters really end up with a guy in the end, do they? I mean, not really?” she asked me at one point.

“Courtney, the focus of the show is the pair of mother-daughter relationships. It’s about the Gilmore Girls. So no, there’s no big wedding at the end or anything, but that’s beside the point. You just want to know that the girls are OK.”

As I gave this little speech Courtney couldn’t help giggling.

“What?” I asked.

“Nothing, nothing,” she said, stifling a smile. “That was just very heartfelt.”

I am very loyal to my friends…even my fake ones.

Seriously Random Thoughts

• I just signed up for a Flickr account, so if you have an account as well, add me as a contact!

• I really appreciate Chick-fil-a’s fruit cups because they don’t have any melon in them. I dislike melon. I also think putting melon in a fruit cup or fruit salad is a cop out for restaurants because it takes up so much room.

• I was driving yesterday and I saw this sign outside of a church: “CH–CH. What’s missing? UR.” I’m all for a clever sign, but I don’t know how I feel about this one.

• The best news I’ve heard in a long time? “We don’t really do care plans in this class.” I love psychiatric nursing already!

• I finally watched the Gilmore Girls series finale yesterday. I was already completely broken up over the penultimate episode, so it’s going to take me awhile to recover from the whole ordeal. I think maybe I need to wallow a little bit. Ice cream and Gilmore Girls on DVD should do the trick!

Happy Tuesday. :)

Not Your Typical Academy Awards Post

My fellow Americans,

I would like to take this opportunity to announce some of my thoughts on the Academy Awards. These thoughts are not necessarily related specifically to the awards except for the fact that they are thoughts that I had while watching said awards. Please indulge me.

1. Although I was vehemently opposed to Dreamgirls or any of its participating members winning anything simply because I thought that the movie was painfully overrated (and by that I mean that the movie was PAINFUL and OVERRATED), I must say that Jennifer Hudson was pretty adorable last night, and now I can’t help but like her.

2. I noticed something quite disconcerting.

Exhibit A: Greg Kinnear, actor in Little Miss Sunshine:

Greg Kinnear

Exhibit B: Ted Bundy, serial killer from the 1970’s:

Ted Bundy

The resemblance is a little too close for comfort.

3. My roommate Carmen really entertains me. She has been out of town for a couple of days, but last night we reunited and sat down to watch the last couple of hours of the Oscars together. The following are some of the things that she said that made me laugh, shake my head in disbelief, and/or wish to prolong the day that she moves to Austin for as long as possible.

–We were watching Jerry Seinfeld do his presentation of best documentary, and he made a joke about how in movie theaters they run advertisements asking you to pick up after yourself. What he said was something like, “Why don’t I just put on an orange jumpsuit and get out my wooden stick with a needle on the end?” Carmen laughs out loud, but with her next breath she abruptly states, “I don’t like that joke, though.”

–At some random point during the evening, as I am staring intently at the TV screen, Carmen offhandedly says, “I’ve never stuck gum up my nose before.” I disinterestedly glance over at her and there she is with a big wad of it sticking out of her right nostril. As she later stated, if there was a montage made of our relationship, that moment would be in it.

–During the segment near the end of the Oscars where they run the tribute to those who have died in the past year, Carmen gives me this speech: “So as I was driving home today I was thinking about my funeral. I was thinking about how David D. [a man from our church who recently died] wanted everyone to eat a BBQ meal after his funeral, and I thought it would be cool to do something like that. So I thought that everyone should go play laser tag, and then I realized that it would make sense because everyone would already be wearing black.”

4. I am glad that The Departed won Best Picture simply for the fact that it is the only one of the nominees that I have seen. This makes my quest to view all of the movies that have won Best Picture easier.

To recap: Dreamgirls was bad, but Jennifer Hudson is OK; Greg Kinnear scares me; my roommate is weird but I love her; and I am lazy.
