Hmm

Today as I was exiting the bus I looked at the bus driver and had the thought, “I wouldn’t want to have a job like that where all these people’s lives are in my hands. If she messed up we could all die.”

Then I remembered what I do for a living.

Four Things

#1: I just painted my toenails a dark shade of purple. I am in a wedding this weekend and the bridesmaid dress is purple, and I do not want my hideous toenail bruises showing. However, it is the worst toenail paint job ever, and I’m wondering if the bruises might not be more attractive.

#2: I am devastated because Bennigan’s has filed for bankruptcy and soon will be closed down forever. This was one of my favorite stand-by restaurants. I always knew I could go there for a good meal (the baked potato soup and 1/2 county cork sandwich with a brownie bottom pie for dessert was my favorite). Never again. Tear.

#3: A good friend of our family’s and a member of our church who has always enjoyed photography is now becoming more serious about it, and thus set up a website. He particularly enjoys action shots, and came out to one of my Saturday morning soccer games the other week and took a bunch of pictures. Go HERE to see them. They are really good, except for my hideous face which is a mixture of concentration, exhaustion, and heat stroke.

#4: I am headed out of town to Kansas tomorrow straight after work for the previously mentioned wedding. I am toting David along with me. It is going to be a crazy fast trip, but memories will be made, I will see some of my best friends, and David and I will be together more than we have in the last week combined. And it will be good to get away, if only for a bit. See you when I get back!

Thoughts From the Week

There has been a lot I’ve wanted to write about this week, but the reason I haven’t is because it seems I’ve been gone from morning till night every day since Tuesday. And I’m not the type of person who can or will sacrifice sleep for much of anything. Thus, all of my blogging thoughts are swimming around in my head, and if I don’t put them down NOW, they just might be lost forever. So this may seem somewhat unorganized and random, and that’s because it is.

I’ll start with the big news in my little family circle, which is that my fiance David’s older brother Chris proposed to his girlfriend Kim on Wednesday evening. We are all so excited that they have made it official! They plan to elope to the west coast in June, and I won’t deny that I am somewhat jealous of that decision as I figure out who gets to stay on our guest list and exactly how many dollars we are going to pay for a photographer. But really, I want the whole shabang and I guess I always have, so I’ll just try to enjoy the process. Anyway, the point is: congratulations, Chris and Kim, I’m so excited to be your sister (in-law)!

Speaking of them, David is currently living in a house that Chris owns, and the four of us have decided that we will all live together there once we’re married. I know that may sound crazy to some people, but we get along great, have already spent a lot of time there together, and it will save us a lot of money for awhile. It does mean that I will have to cut back on the amount of “stuff” that I bring into the marriage (i.e. furniture), and I still don’t know what to do with some things that I can’t get rid of, like all my books. Also, my lease ends in July and for the few months after that until we get married I’ll be moving in with my parents. So I’ll need to be getting rid of my bed, desk, bedside table, and dresser pretty soon.

While we’re on the subject of life-changing events, I picked up my cap and gown the other day. Two weeks until I’m wearing it! My last final exam is on Monday!

I’ve been working a lot lately, and since I am the queen of busy work at the office it tends to get boring. That is why I am forever grateful to David for procuring me a satellite radio. Now I can listen to NPR all day! Just kidding, only about half the day. I admit I do enjoy the occasional E! Channel program. That is how I came to learn all about FHM’s sexiest woman alive list that was just released. I normally wouldn’t comment on this, but I feel obligated because two of the dancers from Dancing with the Stars made the list (Cheryl Burke at no. 40 and Karina Smirnoff at no. 78) but my favorite, Julianne Hough, did not. My roommates and I all totally have a girl crush on her, and I just don’t understand her getting passed over. So here’s to you, Julianne!

And I will leave you with this happy thing: a very short video of my brothers’ puppy’s latest trick:

Technical Difficulties

So I’m house-sitting and the internet isn’t working very well. I had to drive home tonight just to submit an assignment that was due by midnight, but my roommate double-locked the door so I couldn’t get in. Fortunately the wireless is working outside the apartment, so I am currently sitting on the concrete in front of my door. Lovely.

Anyway, I hope to get it sorted out tomorrow and be back in touch with you.

Tonight’s Thoughts

Hey everyone. I’ve been attending a review session for my board exam for the past three days from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tomorrow is the last day of it. It’s good but pretty tiring. Oh, and this is my spring break as well, but I will spend the rest of it working. Some things that I am thinking:

  • I want to do a triathlon and I want to train for it now, but there is no time. So I will postpone my plans.
  • I’m mad that for the second week in a row there have been no bikes left at the Spin class at the gym.
  • I have an interview with The Methodist Hospital oncology unit on Wednesday morning. If they offer me the job and it’s a day shift, I think I’m going to take it even though it’s in the medical center.
  • I miss my fiance. I hate days where we don’t see each other. I want to get married badly, but I don’t feel like planning a wedding right now.
  • Stephen King is a really good writer.
  • I could really go for some dutch chocolate ice cream right now. Easter is less than two weeks away…

Mixed Bag

I let myself go last week and only posted once. Sorry about that. To get back into the swing of things, I’m going to post this meme because I was tagged by Tabaitha last Wednesday, but I’m just now getting around to it.

10 years ago:

  • I was a sophomore in high school, and my classes were pretty easy.
  • It was soccer season, so I was probably doing a lot of that.

Things on my to-do list today:

  • Work
  • Dry cleaning and alterations
  • Laundry
  • Print out a picture to send to Mary (our Compassion child)
  • Go to bed EARLY!

What would I do if I suddenly became a billionaire?

  • Pay off my credit card and my student loans. Also David’s truck.
  • I’d probably buy a house too.
  • Buy some things I really want, like a Tempur-pedic mattress.
  • Support all the charities and organizations that I really believe in.
  • Help people out when they need it.
  • Travel.

Three of my bad habits:

  • Texting and reading while I drive (but I’ve pretty much cut it out thanks to my New Years’ resolution!)
  • Falling asleep at inappropriate times
  • Avoiding any kind of confrontation or conflict

Five jobs I have had:

Five things people don’t know about me:

  • I have a pen pal in Australia that I have been keeping in touch with since 3rd grade
  • I had three hamsters growing up and I named them all after types of bread: Muffin, Crumpet, and Biscuit
  • I suffer from sleep paralysis
  • My morning routine rarely varies. Make bed, shower, dress, hair and makeup, breakfast, take care of Cleo, leave.
  • You wouldn’t think it, but I was a stellar hurdler (100m and 300m) in junior high track.

I tag you!

I Hope I’m Not Breaking Any Laws

Apparently it pays to make barely any money. Last year, since I was a full-time student with only a part-time job, I made about $6,000 and I paid about $1 in federal taxes. I hadn’t done my taxes because I figured there was no way I was getting a refund. But I just decided to do them tonight, using one of the free online services, and wouldn’t you know it? I’m getting a $429 refund due to the Earned Income Credit. This seems crazy to me, and I really hope I’m not doing anything wrong. All I did was follow the instructions. I didn’t make anything up. Does anyone know anything about this?

Driving

As I was driving home tonight, I remembered a conversation I had with my dad when I was learning to drive. I think it went something like this:

Me: So the right lane is for the people going below the speed limit, the middle lane is for people going at the speed limit, and the left lane is for people going above the speed limit?

Dad: pause...Yeah, that’s one way to look at it.

That was the way my structured, naive little brain worked. I never would have imagined that the right lane is for people going a little above the speed limit, the middle lane is for people going a little more over the speed limit, and the left lane is for people going a lot over the speed limit. With the occasional crazy slow driver thrown in there.

Speaking of driving, there are exactly two things that I remember specifically learning in driver’s ed. First, that when coming to a stop you should leave enough room in front of you so that you can see the rear wheels of the car in front of you or so that you can see the stop sign. I rarely do this. Second, that the distance at which you should put on your turn signal before turning is approximately equal to the length of two houses. I do this and think of it almost every single day.

There is only one thing that I remember learning in defensive driving, which is that it is considered littering even if you just toss an apple core or a banana peel out the window. But it’s bio-degradable, right? Doesn’t matter. Don’t mess with Texas!

Thirteen Things

1. My day in the ICU yesterday was kind of boring. Both of my patients had brain aneurysms. They were awake, alert, mobile, and for the most part independent. That means there wasn’t a whole lot for us to do for them.

2. One of the patients was a woman from Baton Rouge, a really sweet lady, and I loved her Cajun accent. She hugged me when I said goodbye to her.

3. The other was a nice man who would have talked to me all day long if I’d let him. Once he found out that I majored in Christian ministry for my first degree, he told me his whole life story. It was very interesting, but for the sake of time I will just say that he was the founder of this ministry.

4. There was a job fair at my school today, where I talked to four different hospitals. I was then inspired and went ahead and applied for the graduate nursing program at all four places. The application for the one I really want, though, is a little more extensive than the others and thus I am not finished with it.

5. Luckily I know a woman who worked at that hospital for most of her life who agreed to write me a letter of recommendation.

6. I have decided that I am mostly interested in working in the areas of critical care and oncology.

7. I am really proud of my indoor soccer team, because we had an awesome come-from-behind win tonight.

8. However, I do not appreciate the fact that there were no female subs, meaning I had to play the whole game, and thus I am utterly exhausted. (It is a coed team and three girls are required to play at all times - six players on the field total.)

9. Tomorrow I have a clinical for my community health class. I make home visits to senior citizens for the Meals on Wheels program. I don’t like it a whole lot, but it’s not too bad.

10. My birthday is next week. I will be 26 years old. The celebration begins this Saturday and ends a week later.

11. I am giving up sugar for Lent this year. Lent begins right in the middle of birthday week, so I am going to stuff myself with cookies, cake, ice cream, brownies, and every kind of chocolate I can get my hands on before then.

12. I need to shower in a bad way. Sometimes showering is such a chore, like when I’m tired and just want to go to sleep. When I was younger I used to skip it if I didn’t feel like it, even if I had played a soccer game that night. I guess sleep has always been my priority.

13. But I don’t do that anymore!
